We Spent Twelve Years Telling You What to Say in Interviews. Now We Built the Thing That Does It With You… Introducing Longbow
Some of you have been reading us since 2013. A lot of you found us last week, three days before an interview, at 11 p.m., searching “how to answer tell me about yourself.”
Either way, you know our one move by now: we figure out what actually works in interviews and job searches, and we write it down for you. We’ve done that across more than 1,500 guides. Over 100 million of you have read them. Career centers at Michigan, Georgetown, Penn State and McGill send their students to them.
So what we’re about to say might sound strange coming from us.
Advice has a ceiling.
The 2 p.m. Thursday problem
Here’s the thing we could never fix with another article, no matter how good we made it.
You can read the best guide ever written on behavioral interviews. You can highlight it, take notes, feel genuinely prepared. And then it’s 2 p.m. on a Thursday, you’re on a video call with a hiring manager at a company we’ve never heard of, interviewing for a role with requirements we’ve never seen, and she asks you something specific. About this job. About your background. About a project you did in 2023.
The article can’t help you now. The article doesn’t know the job, and it doesn’t know you.
Advice is general. Interviews are specific. For twelve years we closed that gap the only way we could: we wrote the advice, and you did the translation work yourself. Which questions apply to this posting. Which of your stories fits. What this particular company actually cares about. How to phrase your experience so it lands with this hiring manager instead of a hypothetical one.
That translation work is the real job of interview prep. It’s also the exhausting part, the part people skip when they’re stressed, and the exact part no article can do for you.
So we built the thing that does it. It’s called Longbow, and this post is the full tour.
Paste a job posting. That’s the whole instruction.
Longbow works like this: you paste a job posting. A link or the full text, either works.
Then it does the translation work you used to do alone at 11 p.m. It reads the posting the way we would read it. It researches the company. It maps your background against what they’re asking for. It predicts the questions you’re most likely to face. And it coaches your answers, built from your actual resume and your actual experience.
What comes back is a complete prep brief for that one specific job:
- Company research, so you walk in knowing what they do, how they hire, and what they’re proud of
- A match analysis, showing where you’re strong for this role and where you’re thin
- The ten questions you’re most likely to be asked in that room, with the reason each one is coming
- Coached answers for those questions, in your voice, from your real background
- Materials, meaning a resume tailored to this job, a cover letter, outreach messages and follow-ups
- Practice, as in actual out-loud mock interviews for this exact role

Every piece of that exists because we spent a decade telling people to do it manually. Let’s walk through the parts that matter most.
The questions you’ll actually face
Most people prepare for interviews in general. Interviews are never in general.
When Longbow reads a posting, it predicts the ten questions this specific role at this specific company is most likely to produce, and it tells you why each one is coming. A delivery-focused consulting firm probes differently than a startup. A role that mentions “cross-functional stakeholders” three times is telegraphing its behavioral questions. The posting is full of tells, and reading them is a skill we’ve been teaching for years. Now it just happens.
Each question comes labeled by type, because the type determines the answer structure. Which brings us to the part we’re proudest of.
Coached answers, in your voice
If you’ve read our SOAR articles, you already know how we think answers should be built: Situation, Obstacle, Action, Result, and the lesson you took from it. The problem was never the method. The problem was that applying the method to your own life, for every question, for every job, is hours of work.
Longbow applies it for you. For each predicted question you get:
- Robin’s Take, a coach’s note on how to approach this question for this company
- An answer framework, filled in from your real background, piece by piece
- Key phrases worth working in, pulled from what this posting rewards
- An “avoid” list, the specific mistakes this question invites
- A practice-ready answer, the whole thing assembled, ready to say out loud

Notice what the answer in that screenshot does. It doesn’t pretend the candidate has experience they don’t have. It says, in effect: your background is adjacent to what they want, here’s how to present the adjacency honestly and strongly. That’s what a good coach does, and it’s the opposite of what you’d get from a tool that just generates impressive-sounding paragraphs.
And the method isn’t one-size-fits-all. Longbow routes each question to the framework that fits it: SOAR for behavioral questions, a strategy structure for situational ones, a technical walkthrough for technical ones, values alignment for culture fit. Ten coached answers are not ten copies of the same shape.
A match score that tells you the truth
Every job tool gives you a score. Here’s ours, and here’s the part that makes it different: it’s allowed to be low.

That’s a 62. Not “Great match!!”, not a suspicious wall of 95s. A 62, and next to it, the exact path upward: coached answers are worth 8 points, a tailored resume 7, a cover letter 3, each practice session 4, and so on, up to a ceiling of 30 points of preparation. The score moves because your readiness moves, and you can see the arithmetic.
The breakdown underneath is just as blunt:

“Where you’re thin” is the section most tools would never ship, because flattery keeps users happier in the short term. We shipped it because you’re going to find out where you’re thin either way. Better here than in the room.
Two design decisions worth knowing. First, we publish the whole scoring method, all seven weighted dimensions of it, on our how it works page, because a score you can’t inspect is a score you can’t trust. Second, the score never gates you. Longbow will build the complete brief for a long-shot role without complaint. It informs. You decide.
Meet Robin
Robin is the career coach inside Longbow, and she’s the closest thing we’ve built to what we’ve actually done for readers all these years, one reply at a time.
She knows your whole search. Your resume, every job you’re chasing, every answer you’ve practiced, how your interviews have gone. Ask her what to focus on this week and she answers about your week, not about job seekers in general. Ask her to poke holes in a story you’re planning to tell, and she will, using the actual job posting as the standard.

Look closely at that screenshot, because there’s a line in it we want you to see. Robin tells this user that one of their applications “raises a flag about whether your search strategy is focused or scattered under pressure.”
Most career software is built to encourage you. We think encouragement without honesty is just noise. Robin will tell you when your story bank is thin, when an application looks like a panic move, and when you’re not ready yet. That’s not a bug in her personality. That’s the job description of a coach.
Two things she will not do, as a matter of principle. She won’t invent numbers, facts or company details she doesn’t have; if it’s not in your data or a verified source, she says so. And she won’t ghostwrite your interview answers. She helps you build them from things that actually happened to you, because in the interview, you’re the one who has to say them out loud and then survive the follow-up question.
Finding jobs that deserve your evening
Longbow also finds jobs, and honestly, we built this part a little angry.
Anyone who has searched recently knows the feeling. You spend an evening tailoring an application, and the posting turns out to be a zombie. It went up two months ago. It’s been reposted three times. Nobody is being hired.
So Longbow checks the receipts. We track each posting’s actual history: when it first appeared, how long it’s been open, whether it expired and quietly came back. Then we tell you, on the job itself:

A long-listed job isn’t necessarily dead, and the check says that too. But you deserve to know a posting’s age before you budget your energy for it, and no job board is going to volunteer that information, because job boards get paid by the posting, not by your outcome.
The feed itself uses the same honest scoring as your prep briefs:

And no, Longbow will not auto-apply to any of them for you. More on that in a minute, because it’s a hill we’re prepared to die on.
Practice out loud, because interviews happen out loud
Here’s a piece of advice we’ve given ten thousand times: practice your answers out loud. Here’s the truth about that advice: almost nobody does it, because practicing into a mirror feels ridiculous and practicing with your spouse is somehow worse.
So Longbow runs the mock interview for you. Real voice, real time, tailored to the specific job you’re prepping. An interviewer asks the questions, listens to your answer, follows up, and moves on, and when you finish, you get a scored debrief on what landed and what didn’t.
There are two modes, because there are two stages of readiness:
- Warm-Up walks through your prepped questions in order, at your pace. You say when you’re done with each answer. It’s for building the muscle.
- Hot Seat remixes the questions, probes your resume, and moves when you stop talking. No script, no done button. It’s for finding out whether the muscle is real.

The first time you hear yourself ramble through an answer you thought was ready, you’ll understand why we built this. The fifth time, you won’t ramble.
Your resume, tailored per job, without touching the original
You already know our position on resumes: one generic resume sent everywhere is how you get filtered out everywhere. But tailoring by hand for every application is the chore that breaks people.
Longbow keeps one master resume, scores it, and then cuts a tailored version for each job you’re chasing, emphasizing what that posting cares about. The master never changes. The tailored versions are always job-specific, always downloadable, and always yours.

Cover letters get the same treatment, and if you open one, you can read the reasoning behind its structure right in the product. We rebuilt that generator against current hiring research, not against what worked in 2015, and we show our work.
Everything after the interview, too
The interview ends and the anxiety just changes shape. What do I send? When? How many times? What do I say about salary?
Longbow covers the whole back half:
- Follow-up emails, drafted for you, timed sensibly. And this is real: there’s a stopping rule. After your second unanswered follow-up, Longbow tells you to let it go. There is no third follow-up template, because we refused to build one. We will not write you a begging email.
- Salary and negotiation prep, using live market data for your role and location, turned into an actual script, because “just negotiate!” is advice, and a script is help.
- LinkedIn prep, including a findability report that shows how you look to a recruiter searching for someone like you, and what to fix.
The long game: getting more hireable as you search
There’s one more layer, and it’s the one that quietly matters most if your search runs longer than a few weeks.
Every prep brief reveals skill gaps for that job. Longbow watches the gaps that keep appearing across all your applications and turns them into patterns: this one skill keeps costing you points across every posting you like. Then it points you at specific courses that would close it.

Full disclosure, because we’d rather over-tell you than under-tell you: some of those course links are affiliate links, and we may earn a commission if you enroll. The matching is based on your gaps, not the commission.
Who Longbow is actually for
We built Longbow for three people, and you’re probably one of them.
You have an interview coming up. This is the emergency room case. Paste the posting, get the research, the questions and the coached answers, practice out loud tonight. This is the fastest path from “oh no” to “ready” that we know how to build.
You’re applying but not hearing back. Your problem is upstream of the interview: targeting, resume match, findability. Longbow shows you the match analysis for jobs you want, tailors the resume, checks the ghost jobs, and tells you honestly where you’re thin.
You’re employed but restless. You want a better job than you have, and you have time to be strategic. The skills work, the career profile, and Robin’s longer-view coaching are for exactly this. Search like a sniper, not like a shotgun.
What Longbow is not
We’ve spent years reviewing other people’s career tools, so we know you should ask this question about ours. Straight answers:
It’s not an auto-apply tool. Longbow will never fire your resume at 200 jobs, and that’s a decision, not a missing feature. Mass-applying is how you get ignored at scale, and every recruiter we’ve ever interviewed says the same. We built the opposite machine: one for winning the handful of jobs that actually matter to you.
It’s not magic. Paste a vague three-line posting and you’ll get vaguer output. Give it nothing about your background and the coaching can’t use your real experience. The people who get the most from Longbow are the ones who give it the most to work with.
It won’t perform your interview for you. Robin coaches; she doesn’t ghostwrite. Some tools promise to whisper answers in your ear during the call. We think that’s a great way to get caught, and a worse way to get a job you can actually do.
And it’s new. The Interview Guys has been around since 2013; Longbow is young. It has fewer reviews than tools that have been selling subscriptions for five years, and we’d rather tell you that than have you wonder. If you’re the type who checks receipts before signing up for anything (we approve), we wrote an unusually honest page for you: Is Longbow legit? covers who builds it, what it costs, and what it isn’t good at yet, in our own words. There’s also a full about page with names, faces and company details.
What we do with your data
Short version: your career history is yours.
We don’t train AI models on your resume or on anything else you put into Longbow. Your data is used to coach you, and that’s all it’s used for. You can download your account data any time from settings, and deleting your account starts a real deletion, not a hidden archive. The full detail lives in our privacy policy.
What it costs, and what free actually gets you
Free is not a trial. It doesn’t expire, and it doesn’t ask for a card.
On a free account you can paste as many job postings as you want, and every one gets a full prep brief: the company research, the complete match analysis, all ten predicted questions, and your first three coached answers in full. You also get ten messages a day with Robin, the job feed with Ghost Check, and our complete playbook of tactics. That’s not a teaser tier; people have prepped real interviews entirely on it.
Pro unlocks the depth: every coached answer for every job, tailored resumes and cover letters, unlimited mock interviews including voice, unlimited Robin, salary and negotiation tools, and the LinkedIn work.
Pro costs $17 for a week, $37 for a month, or $97 for a quarter. Cancel from inside your account in two clicks, no emails, no retention specialist. There’s a thirty-day money-back guarantee. And there is no annual plan, on purpose: Longbow is priced for the sprint of a real job search, and we don’t think you should still be paying us in a year. Details on the pricing page.
Questions you’ll probably ask
How is this different from ChatGPT? ChatGPT answers whatever you ask and forgets you when the tab closes. Longbow is built around your actual search: it researches the specific company, tailors everything to the specific role, remembers your history, and coaches from your real background. One is a brilliant blank box. The other is a coach who knows your situation and gets sharper the longer you work together.
Do I need a resume ready to start? No. Paste a job posting and Longbow starts working immediately. But upload your resume early if you can, because that’s what turns generic-good coaching into coaching about you.
Will my prep disappear if I cancel Pro? No. Cancelling drops you to the free plan; your jobs, prep, history and documents all stay. We’re not holding your career hostage.
Can I use it for more than one job at once? That’s the intended use. Each job gets its own brief, its own tailored resume, its own practice. The dashboard keeps the whole hunt organized in one place.
Twelve years of advice, finally with hands
Here’s the honest summary of everything above.
Nothing Longbow does is a new idea. Research the company. Predict the questions. Build answers from real stories. Practice out loud. Tailor the resume. Follow up like a professional, and negotiate like you mean it. We’ve been telling you all of this since 2013, and it has always worked.
It was just a lot of lonely work, at the exact moment in your life when you were most stressed and least able to do lonely work.
Longbow is that work, done with you. The advice finally grew hands.
Paste a job posting and see what comes back. It’s free, no card, and the first prep brief usually makes the argument better than we just did.
Paste a job posting. We do everything else.
Longbow is the career tool we spent a year building — company research, a resume tailored to the exact job, and coached answers in 60 seconds. And Robin, your career coach, remembers your whole search and learns what’s actually landing offers.
